Sunset Square Prairie -
California Residence
Nestled into a historically preserved neighborhood in a bustling city this four-square prairie house was beautifully original on the inside; but very pale, overgrown and neglected on the outside. “Prairie style” architecture was inspired by the great two story homes of the Midwest designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at the turn of the last century.
In the front entry garden, 60 year-old and 15 foot high shrubs were removed revealing the beautiful symmetry and “bones” of the home. Architecturally incorrect items such as window boxes were removed from the façade of the building. Original detail trim had been removed, but was researched and added back to the house restoring its stately beauty. Paint colors were chosen from a historic paint color palette but combined in a way to make it more contemporary.
In the back a contemporary style pool and two patios were added but all design details were created with a nod to the vintage architecture of the home. One raised patio off the den is for intimate sitting and gathering; the other is off the pool house for dining and entertaining larger groups.
The planting is designed in a modern way using more antique style plants that would have been common when the home was built. The rear garden is wonderful place for entertaining but extensive lighting was added in the landscape making it a great space for night entertaining as well.
A home that was once pale and unnoticed now stands out as a stately example of historic architecture in a neighborhood of historic homes.
