Hollywood Craftsman - California Residence

Designed by Gustav Stickley and Company; the charm and 100+ year old age of this Craftsman Bungalow inspired a contemporary Japanese style in the garden and landscape. River stone from the original chimney had fallen in the Northridge earthquake of 1994 but had been kept onsite by the owner. We used that stone in the project as a nod to the history of the home.

Craftsman Architecture was very much inspired by traditional Japanese house design during the early 1900’s to the 1920’s. So we added Japanese architectural details throughout the landscape to tie in to the original craftsman details on the house.

The new front entry garden was opened up to greet and bring in the neighborhood by removing old wood fences. New, low stone walls were added at the front property line to define the space and balance the river stone on the front façade and columns. The overall effect is contemporary, balanced, open and friendly with a Japanese flavor through the use of materials and forms.

In the back garden new fences were added to create a private and intimate space with a patio living area, dining area and fireplace adjacent to the pool. The planting scheme and the house colors were designed to bring the contemporary and vintage together.
