Beverly Hills Ranch -
California Residence
This ranch style house was built in the late 1960’s as part of a large tract. The interior of the home is typical of the ranch style popular at the time with an open and flowing floor plan. The clients had redone all of the finishes on the interior and wanted to update the existing pool and rear garden to match; while more importantly also making it safe for their young son.
The existing overgrown hillside planting was severely pruned and cut back. We removed over 15 trees. The existing pool coping and deck were removed and demolished as well as a small and useless spa.
The new deck was designed to be modern and clean, but also a great place to ride a tricycle. A “floating” thick and chunky bench with clean lines for added seating and entertaining now runs along the line of usable flat space and a newly planted drought tolerant hillside. A new automatic pool cover and baby “baja shelf” for water play were added for safety. At the dining area we created a steel pergola for shade and cantilevered it 11 feet to reduce the intrusion of columns into the usable living space.
The new planting was designed to look very “modern” and also to be drought tolerant out of respect and necessity of the water shortages in Southern California. Extensive lighting was added to create drama for night time entertaining and relaxing.
